Mr. Islam Swaleh
African Union Thought Leader on Investment, Value Addition and Responsible Minerals Governance
Mr. Islam Swaleh is a respected African policy leader and development practitioner serving as Acting Head of Entrepreneurship and Investment at the African Union Commission’s Department of Economic Development, Trade, Tourism, Industry and Minerals (ETTIM), where he has contributed to continental thinking around quality investment, enterprise development, value addition and Africa’s industrial transformation agenda. His work aligns strongly with the aspirations of Agenda 2063, particularly around strengthening African production systems and positioning minerals as drivers of development rather than extraction alone.
As a contributor to the Africa Responsible Minerals & Gender Index (ARMGI) dialogue convened during the Twelfth Africa Regional Forum on Sustainable Development (ARFSD-12), Mr. Swaleh brought important policy perspectives on accountable mineral value chains, beneficiation and the role of investment frameworks in supporting inclusive mineral governance. His engagement strengthened the continental framing of ARMGI and contributed meaningfully to discussions on how accountability tools can support Africa’s critical minerals future.
Mr. Swaleh has been a valued supporter of dialogue and partnership pathways promoted by Women in Mining Africa (WiM-Africa), particularly around responsible minerals, enterprise development and opportunities for women and communities within African value chains. His support reflects the kind of multi-stakeholder leadership ARMGI seeks to foster across African institutions.
