WiM-Africa Research & Data Hub

Across Africa’s mineral sector, one challenge persists: the absence of credible, gender-responsive, and Africa-led data.

Women-led mining enterprises remain undocumented. Safety realities in mining communities are underreported. Gender-disaggregated data rarely informs policy, financing, or ESG accountability frameworks.

The WiM-Africa Research & Data Hub was established to change that.

Operating under Agenda 6 of WiM-Africa’s Seven-Point Program Agenda and led by the Directorate of Strategy, Planning & Research, the Hub serves as WiM-Africa’s continental knowledge platform and foundational pillar of the WiM-Africa Institute for Leadership, Sustainable Mining & Value Addition.

Our Mandate

The Research & Data Hub exists to generate credible, Africa-led evidence that strengthens:

  • Gender-responsive mineral governance

  • Women-led mineral value addition

  • Mining safety and risk intelligence

  • ESG accountability and compliance

  • Evidence-based policy engagement

We are building structured data systems that improve visibility, inform investment, and elevate women’s participation across Africa’s mineral value chain.

Research Network

The Hub operates through a structured affiliation model comprising:

Research Associates
Senior Research Fellows
Country Research Leads

Affiliates contribute to research outputs under a formal governance and ethics framework, ensuring institutional discipline and credibility.

What We Are Building

The Hub is developing a structured research architecture across multiple African countries, including:

Africa Women in Mining Baseline Studies
Continental and country-level snapshots to inform policy and funding priorities.

Women-Led Mineral Enterprise Registry
A structured database increasing visibility of women-led mining and mineral value addition enterprises.

Gender & Mining Safety Risk Observatory
A pilot risk intelligence framework documenting safety patterns and community-level concerns.

Policy Briefs & Technical Papers
Evidence-backed submissions supporting AU, DFI, and regional engagement.

Governance & Standards

All research conducted under the Hub operates in accordance with a formal governance framework, including ethical standards, data protection safeguards, and publication protocols.

This ensures transparency, accountability, and institutional integrity.
