Prof. Ignatius A. Madu

Environmental Governance, Host Communities and Sustainable Development Specialist

Prof. Ignatius A. Madu is a Professor of Human Geography at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, with expertise in rural environment, development and sustainability.  He has served twice as Head of Department of Geography and Environmental Sustainability and as Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, providing academic and institutional leadership at the intersection of environment, livelihoods and development.


He currently leads the Population, Environment and Development Research Group, and has contributed extensively to research and policy dialogue on sustainability, socio-economic development and environmental governance. Beyond academia, he has served on numerous Federal Ministry of Environment technical review panels for development projects in Nigeria, including as chair and socio-economic expert, bringing practical experience in assessing community impacts and development risks.


A widely published scholar and seasoned contributor to national and international development discourse, Professor Madu brings to the ARMGI dialogue a strong perspective on host community outcomes, environmental accountability and inclusive development in extractive landscapes.


Contribution to the ARMGI Dialogue

At the ARMGI side event, Prof. Madu contributes expertise on how responsible minerals governance can better deliver measurable social, environmental and livelihood outcomes for host communities, and how accountability frameworks such as ARMGI may help strengthen community-centered approaches to mineral development.
